Anat and Nadiv Fisher are a married couple who volunteer with Leket Israel in collecting cooked food for those who need it. As dedicated volunteers over the past six years, they have given a great deal of their time to volunteering and have rescued more than 13,370 meals that were then donated to hundreds of needy people through Leket Israel’s partner network of nonprofit organizations in the Sharon region.
Every Thursday, no matter what time of the year, they are “on call”, going out whenever food needs to be collected. At night, they wait to hear where to go and then hurry off to the nearby banquet halls. After collecting, they take the food to a nearby storage center where the food is kept in refrigerators overnight. The volunteering might often continue until the early hours of the morning until all the surplus food is rescued.
“Seven years ago, I was first introduced to Leket Israel by my brother, who also volunteers with his wife. I went with him to a family who was sitting shiva, and at the end of it they offered to donate 100 untouched trays of fresh food, ”Anat recalls. “After seeing the enormous amount of food that would otherwise have been thrown into the trash, I understood, for the first time, the magnitude of the problem.” She and her husband immediately decided to become regular volunteers with Leket Israel, and they have been with us ever since.
The value of giving back to the community is important to Anat and Nadiv’s family and is part of their way of life. Together, they continue to rescue nutritious cooked meals, rich in protein and carbohydrates for those who cannot afford them.
Leket Israel rescues tens of thousands of tons of fresh produce and cooked meals, and redistributes this food to hundreds of thousands of needy people throughout the country. This would not be possible without loyal and committed volunteers such as Nadiv and Anat Fisher.
