A Visit from the Top
Leket Israel is constantly striving to promote its operations and the range of programs throughout the country. Particularly during this difficult time, Leket’s cooperation with government officials has increased significantly.
In July, Leket was honored to host President Reuven Rivlin along with MK Alon Schuster, Minister of Agriculture, at the new Logistics Center in Gan Haim. During their visit, the President and the Minister learned about Leket’s extensive food rescue and distribution operation, met some of Leket’s dedicated staff and volunteers packing and sorting produce in preparation for delivery, and were astounded by the massive quantities of fruit and vegetables saved from destruction in the refrigerated storage rooms. Leket staff explained the challenges of managing the operations during the COVID-19 crisis, and raised the subject of possible government support of nonprofits distributing food to Israelis in need during the current crisis.
President Rivlin observed,
“The Corona crisis is not just a health crisis, it is a social and economic crisis. The weaker amongst our population have gotten weaker. Now more than ever, we need to show our solidarity and care. Organizations like Leket Israel exemplify these qualities. The State of Israel needs to support organizations like Leket Israel. They understand the needs and know how to address them.”
Throughout the summer, a number of additional Members of Knesset visited the Logistics Center to learn about the important work that Leket is doing every day. These visitors included, MK Gila Gamliel, Minister for Environmental Protection; Omer Yankelevich, Minister of Diaspora Affairs; MK Ophir Sofer; MK Michal Kotler Wench; MK Hila Shay Vazan; Dr. Avigdor Kaplan, Director General of the Ministry of Labor, Welfare and Social Services; and many more.
Leket is delighted by the increased recognition and belief in the organization’s work by government officials, and for the importance they see in food rescue to support Israelis in need.
