Summary of July’s Activities

In July, the Leket Agriculture team rescued and harvested 2,043 tons (4.1 million lbs) of fresh produce from famers. If we compare it to July last year, it’s a 40% increase! All produce was distributed to those in need throughout the country.

In addition, we distributed 132,487 cooked meals to the needy. 85% of these meals were rescued from catering companies, IDF army bases and more. We are doing our best to increase the amount of meals rescued and hoping for a bigger increase in the coming months.

Summary of June’s Activities

During the month of June when the economy started its “Corona Routine”, we received an influx in produce from famers and rescued an all-time record high of 2,226 tons (4.5 million lbs) of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The economic crisis is only continuing to grow and we are doing everything we can to meet the need. In June there was a 15% increase in the demand for cooked meals and a 25% increase in the demand for fresh produce.

April 4th, 2020

During the third week of the coronavirus crisis our new partnerships and initiatives have continued to meaningfully expand in addition to our regular food-rescue operations.

In a joint operation with local authorities, local community centers and different nonprofits, Leket brings boxes of fresh produce to various distribution points in the different cities. From there, the boxes are delivered to needy families with the help of local volunteers.

We are now working with tens of cities including Tiberias, Mazkeret Batya, Bet Shemesh, Givat Shmuel, Bet Shean, Modiin, Jerusalem, Migdal Haemek, Lod, Bat Yam and more. The nonprofits we have built new partnerships with distributed boxes of fresh produce to needy families and also sent 150 volunteers to help deliver hot meals to the homes of needy people. These nonprofits include “Acharai”, “Tovanot B’Hinuch”, “Enosh” and more.

Our partnerships with companies including Intel, Amdocs, SAP and McDonald’s have assisted in funding operations. The IDF Home Front Command have also helped through providing trucks to carry and deliver the fresh produce. Our teams delivered a weeks’ worth of meals to the homes of 9,000 needy people. Since the start of the Emergency Relief Program, some 100,000 hot meals have been provided.

We met our weekly goal and managed to increase the numbers of meals going out by 30%. With Passover soon approaching, we are preparing to distribute next week some 100,000 hot meals for Seder night and the holiday to 10,500 needy people.

This week also saw thousands of tons of crops ready for harvest left in the fields of many farmers. During the entire month of March, Project Leket teams picked some 1,800,000 kg. of fruit and vegetables, double the regular monthly average. We have had to rent additional refrigeration space due to this large increase, and our trucks are busy delivering to every new location we are providing to.

We are continuing to distribute fruit and vegetables to the needy through our partner nonprofits located all over the country.

In addition, in a partnership with the nonprofit Tovanot B’Hinuch in Bat Yam 175 families received 340 boxes containing a range of fruit and vegetables.

The second week of the crisis signaled the start of new joint initiatives alongside our continuing efforts to rescue food for the needy.

This week, our Leket drivers and Leket to Table team managed to rescue and distribute 44,300 hot meals to the nonprofit organizations we work with. All meals are made up of a main course and two side dishes.

In addition to our food rescue efforts, our teams delivered hot meals to the doorsteps of some 6,000 housebound needy. Each needy person received a box containing a weeks’ worth of meals, in total some 36,000 meals were distributed. We managed to double the number of meal recipients compared to last week. Next week, we hope to provide 9,000 needy with a weeks’ worth of hot meals. We also are making preparations for Passover to assure that no one will go hungry.

This week we also began a new project with the nonprofit Nevet, supplying hot meals and nutritious breakfast packages to the homes of hundreds of families of at-risk teens from different schools.

The quantities of fresh produce being donated at present are vast due to the closure of hotels, catering companies, restaurants and more. Due to the importance of supplying the needy population with fresh fruit and vegetables, we do not turn down any requests from farmers to come and rescue produce. We have started renting additional refrigerating space, and our trucks are delivering the produce all over the country. This week our Leket field coordinators, team of drivers and logistics workers rescued some 1036172 lbs. (470 tons) of fresh fruit and vegetables, some of which has already been delivered to our nonprofit partners.

New partnerships and projects that we have started with local authorities, community centers and nonprofits are also now receiving the fresh produce. We packaged and delivered over 200 boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables that were distributed to some 120 families in Givat Olga. The same amount was sent to Enush, a nonprofit in Kfar Saba. The population Enush supports have also recently lost their jobs. We plan on continuing to increase the delivery of fresh produce to a larger number of needy recipients

Our teams are working hard to continue to supply packages of fruit and vegetables to needy families. We plan on expanding this operation and increasing cooperation with one of our partnering non-profit organizations “Enosh”. “Enosh” helps and supports people with mental disabilities. Many of those they assist worked until recently in factories as the disability benefits they are entitled to are too small to live off of. Due to the current crisis, they have lost their jobs.

In parallel, our teams are continuing to rescue excess food, both hot meals and fresh produce. All rescued food is distributed to the needy through our partner non-profit organizations, located throughout the country.

  • Our Leket to Table drivers rescued 1,287 meals, the majority from IDF bases all over Israel

March 22nd, 2020

Since the onset of the coronavirus crisis we have had to come up with innovative solutions to enable us to continue operating.  We had to devise an alternate plan of how to serve the housebound needy population as well as the elderly.

On Thursday, we launched our unique emergency program for these difficult times. We distributed over 15,000 hot meals to 2,500 needy and elderly cooked for us by North Food catering company. 6 meals were delivered to the doorstep of each recipient, enabling us to provide them with a hot meal for Shabbat and for each week day. On Wednesday of this week, we aim to distribute another round of hot meals to an increased number of people, especially the elderly.

During the week, the Leket to Table drivers and team were able to still rescue and distribute 30,586 hot meals in addition to the emergency meal program we launched. Each rescued meal contained a main dish and two side servings.

Our field coordinators, drivers and logistics team collected 798,073 lbs. (362 tons)  of fresh fruit and vegetables. These included 145,505 lbs. (66 tons) of potatoes, 121,254 lbs. (55 tons) of pomelos, 85,980 lbs. (39 tons)  of cucumbers, 77,161 lbs. (35 tons) of carrots, 55,115 lbs. (25 tons) of tomatoes, 50,706 lbs. (23 tons) of grapefruits, 44,092 lbs. (20 tons) of mushrooms and more.

We are continuing our activities, routine and emergency, whilst adhering to all new rules and guidelines in place due to the crisis.

March 19th, 2020

Thank you all for you interest during this time and for following our daily updates.

Today our new meal distribution program for the elderly and those who are house bound began operating. The hot meals for this new project are cooked by “North Food” company whom we also work with throughout the year, a wonderful  company which cooks from the heart for the needy. The new program enables us to assist them too, as now they can continue employing their workers. All the cooked meals meet strict food health and safety standards.

As well as this unique new program, our teams are continuing to collect and rescue excess food and to distribute it to the needy.

  • Our Leket to Table drivers saved 2072 hot meals. The majority were from IDF bases throughout the country.
  • Project Leket: Our field coordinators, pickers and drivers collected and rescued 62611 lbs. (28.4 tons) of fresh produce including potatoes, carrots, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, citrus fruits and mushrooms.

We will continue to update daily.

March 18th, 2020

Yesterday 30 of our non-profit partners closed their operations. We are doing everything we can to continue to provide food to ones still running, as well as to our recipients who are home bound.

Our Leket drivers were able to rescue and distribute 2,287 hot meals mainly from IDF bases and companies still operating. Although, we have been able to continue rescuing hot meals until now, we do expect the numbers to drop over the next few days.

Our Leket field coordinators collected 45,000,000 lbs (20,300,000 kg) of fresh and nutritious produce. It has been sent to be packed at our Ra’anana Logistics Center. The produce can only be sorted and packed by Leket workers as due to current circumstances we cannot use the help of our dedicated volunteers.

The food will be distributed through our nonprofit partners.

Tomorrow we will begin to operate our meal distribution program for the elderly and for those who have to stay home, bringing them meals to their doors. Stay updated!  We will continue to give daily updates throughout this time.

March 17th, 2020

We are continuing our efforts to rescue and distribute as much food as we can to those who need it most. Yesterday, we rescued and delivered 8,789 hot meals from IDF army bases and companies who are still working. Sadly, our hot meal rescue and distribution line in Eilat is no longer operating as all of the hotels there are closed.

Project Leket is still running. Yesterday in the fields, we picked 54,600 pounds (27.3 tons) of fresh fruit and vegetables. We also collected 87,400 pounds (43.7 tons) of produce from a packing house including 6 tons of beets, 6 tons of radishes, 14 tons of persimmons and more.

We are currently working on creating an alternate plan so we can continue to provide hot meals to Israel’s needy. Thank you for checking in on our operations during this difficult time. We will continue to provide daily updates on our activities and all developments.

March 16th, 2020

Especially during this crisis we are continuing to work to help those who need us. As our operations continue we are collecting food from hotels and restaurants due to close. The IDF is also continuing to donate excess food.

Yesterday, 9,042 hot meals were rescued as well as 50,265 lbs (22,800 kg) of fruit and vegetables.

Both the hot meals and fresh produce are speedily being distributed throughout the country to the need
