Yitro Recipe – Ten Commandments Challah

Carol Unger

Ingredients for one loaf

1/2 tablespoon yeast
1 cup lukewarm water
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup oil
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg yolk
Instructions for one loaf

Dissolve the yeast in 1 cup of luke warm water. Add 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup oil, 3 cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt and one egg yolk. Knead together to form dough (if the dough is sticky add more flour). Let rise until doubled.

Take challah without a bracha. Roll out the dough into a circle. Roll two strips of dough to frame the circle and another strip for the line bisecting the challah. Roll thin one inch strips of dough and shape into letters. Let the dough rise again for 45-1 hour.

Using a paint brush, glaze the letters with egg yolk and then add poppy seeds. Glaze the frame too. Leave the rest of the dough unglazed. Bake for 45 minutes at 175 C or 350 F in a preheated oven.
