About a month ago Ido and Dror, who live in “Kfar Tikva” (Hope village) began to volunteer three times a week with Leket Israel at the organization’s logistics center in Nesher. They volunteer sorting, packing and preparing baskets of vegetables for distribution to nonprofit organizations that Leket Israel supports throughout the year.

Kfar Tikva is a village for adults with special needs, founded in 1964 on the “Zaid hills of the Jezreel Valley, near Kiryat Tivon. The population is of diverse ages, disabilities, levels of functioning and independence. Currently about 200 residents reside in the village.

Through their volunteering Ido and Dror help Leket Israel efficiently deliver produce that has been rescued from agricultural fields across the country, so that the agencies sported by Leket Israel, receive fresh, high quality produce. The Nesher logistics center provides food on a daily basis to dozens of organizations in Haifa and the North, thus reaching tens of thousands of people every week.

“Attitudes to people with special needs has changed in recent decades. In the past they were expected to adapt to the demands of “normal” society. Today we speak providing a full and meaningful life to everyone whatever their capabilities,” says Einav Sarig, a social worker in Kfar Tikva.

Einav adds “On a daily basis, there are not many organizations that will take on the challenge of “inclusion”, that of bringing people with special needs into their operations. It is inspiring to meet people who choose to do so. Dror and Ido gained a work place in the community, and furthermore – the possibility to contribute and give to others who need their help.”

Ran, manager of the Nesher Logistics Center reports: “Ido and Dror are very dedicated , responsible and hardworking. It’s very rewarding to see them arrive to volunteer – happy and looking forward to the day. We are proud to include them in the important work that Leket Israel does.”

“It is a fantastic experience because we are treated well. It’s a better job than those available in the village because help is really needed here.” Ido concludes.
