World Food Day in Israel

October 2014 – About “World Food Day” in Israel.

World Food Day was created by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and is celebrated annually on October 16th across 150 countries around the world to raise awareness of nutritional security.

In Israel, 40% of food produced is wastefully thrown away across the supply chain of distribution from farmers to packing houses, and kitchens of restaurants and the catering industry. Leket Israel prevents this waste by rescuing food that would otherwise be disposed and distributes it to the needy across the country.

As part of the organization’s vision, Leket Israel works to reduce the amount of food wasted especially seeing as over 1.5 million of Israelis live below the poverty line and suffer from nutritional insecurity.

Leket Israel would like to call upon the public to join us in our mission of preventing food waste and raise awareness of this dire issue.

World Food Day 2014 coincided with the Succot Holiday and therefore has been postponed in Israel and will be held on November 4, 2014.

HAPPENINGS ON WORLD FOOD DAY IN ISRAEL: This is the second year that Leket Israel will honor this day through various activities in order to increase awareness of Leket Israel’s work in resolving the following pressing issues:

  • The growing problem of global food waste with 40% of food being unnecessarily destroyed each year
  • Lack of healthy food for a growing number of the world’s population

This year on November 4, 2014,The Knesset of Israel will host a day with discussions across all committees relevant to the topics surrounding World Food Day.

Throughout this special day, a central event will be hosted by the Chairman of the Knesset along with 3 Knesset members from different parties in partnership with Leket Israel. The conference will address the topics of food waste, waste prevention and the need for food rescue.
