Eighteen years ago, Joseph Gitler, deeply concerned by the amount of food being destroyed in Israel, began collecting excess food in his own car and redistributing it to Israelis in need. What started as a one-person initiative has grown into Leket Israel, the largest food rescue operation in the country. With over 100 employees and 15,000 annual volunteers, Leket Israel continues to provide nutritional support to 246,000 Israelis in need weekly through a partnership with 300 nonprofit agencies.
